Online communities gain statehood by re-framing the requirements for becoming a state according to the culture and ideology of their communities. In the process, they create loopholes and work-arounds that challenge the formal definition of territory, finding ways to layer their identity as a community on top of the existing world.
By becoming a state, the members of these communities take on a new form of blended citizenship, split between the physical and digital worlds. Their homes become embassies -- individual nations in a diffuse national network -- and their daily lives take on the rituals and behaviors required to maintain their new state.
A 10-minute Internet outage in a London apartment building forces five citizens of five archetypal online states to interact with each other in the physical world.
