Otium Radio (UmK)
When Surrey Became Otium :
A fiction that combines technocratic ideologies with extraordinary geo-engineering plans, 'Otium' represents a dystopia of total fulfilment.
(Excerpt of Narration)
"After the break up of the United Kingdom and the formation of the UmK, (United Micro Kingdoms) the county of Surrey became the largest acquisition of Exxon Mobil in the company's history.
Exxon renamed the county OTIUM, and used pioneering research to make magma power stations, drilling miles into the earth's core and using lava to generate electricity. Multiple volcanic power stations were tested and created, and proved to be a phenomenal success, swiftly making Otium a power supplier for much of the United Micro Kingdoms and parts of Europe."
"The state was run by a consortium of scientists, engineers and social psychologists, with an emphasis on participants health and fitness. In order to maintain a constant form of control and to persuade a specific way of life, a single radio station was devised. Radio Otium became a source of social order, broadcast constantly and providing the inhabitants with a perpetual narrative. By day the broadcast included regular updates on productivity and economic rates, as well as a constant rotation of radio calisthenics and motivational exercises."
The County of Otium and Radio Otium was conceived as a way of highlighting social systems and tools of communication as persuasive mechanisms, and the way in which these elements can design a way of life and shape ideologies. The project is presented through an inhabitant of Otium. We join Felix Hoenikker Jr. on day 180 in the Otium Cycle. His ten year contract is up for renewal and as he enjoys his breakfast we can experience the soundtrack to Otium, as Errol Davis, Director of Otium gives his daily announcements.
This project aims to present an unthinkable outcome to issues of commercial power, enforced realities and approaches to mass control. Drawing on a wide variety of influences, from Disney Imagineering to the Situationist International group, an initial concern was the redesign of leisure time, or perhaps how leisure time could be viewed as a carefully constructed system.
